Peter Andreas Munch connected the name with a reconstructed Norwegian verb *svirka, corresponding to Proto-Germanic *swerkaną (“to become dark”), reflected in Old English sweorcan (“to become dark, be obscured”). If this explanation is correct, the river name would have meant approximately “the dark one”.
