Inherited from Old Norse Spjótaberg, with a Danish-influenced spelling. The Old Norse name is formed from the genitive plural of spjót (“spear”) and berg (“rock, hill”). The first element probably refers to pointed projections in the bedrock near the old rectory and church.
First attested in 1342 as Spiotaberghi.
