Potentially attested as early as 1179 as spankeren, attested with certainty as spankeren in 1307. Etymology unclear. Perhaps a compound derived from Middle Dutch spang (“elongated strip of land”) and Old Dutch heri (“sandy ridge”). An alternative etymology interprets the first component as a hydronym of unclear origins.
