Inherited from Old Norse Skútunes or a closely related Old Norse form, probably from skúta (“projecting rock wall, cliff face”) + nes (“headland, ness”). The first element refers to a projecting rock face at the southeastern tip of Karmøy. First attested in 1418 in the Middle Norwegian phrase a Skutonesi (“at Skudenes”).
