Uncertain. Possibly from Old Norse Selund, a compound from selr (“seal”) + the suffix -und (“suffix for placenames”), thus meaning place with seals. The later name was Sjóland, which changed the meaning to "sea-land;" see sær (“sea”). More at Zealand.
