Various theories include: An unrecorded Middle English place name: *Shadok from Old English *scēaduc (“little boundary”) or *Scēadāc from scēad (“shade”) + āc (“oak”). *Shatok from *Scēatāc from scēat (“corner; nook; bay”) + āc (“oak”). A variant pronunciation of Chadwick. From the Middle English personal name Sad(d)oc, ultimately from Hebrew צָדוֹק (Ṣadôq, “righteous”)—the name of a high priest during the rule of David and Solomon and numerous characters in the Old Testament, equivalent to modern Zadok.
