Attested as Ottoman Turkish [script needed] (sifrati) [15th c.], French Sfrati [1820], Greek Σφράτι (Sfráti) [1857]. Perhaps akin to Fratar. According to François Pouqueville, see quote under Sfrati, it was named after a monastery built by the Normans.
