Sense

=== Etymology ===
From Middle High German sē̆nse, contraction of seinse, from older sëgense, from Old High German segansa, itself by metathesis from segisna, from Proto-West Germanic *sagisnu. Cognate with Dutch zeis.
The development ei < ege is found in Central German, but also in Bavarian (compare Getreide, verteidigen etc.). In the latter, contraction of the diphthong yields sanse (as in zwanzig < zweinzec). The form sense is of Central German origin. Alemannic generally retained consonantal ⟨g⟩, which also occurs elsewhere.
