== German == === Etymology === Earlier 20th century, from schrumpfen (“to shrink”) +‎ Germane (“Germanic”). Based on the then-fashionable stereotype of the “tall-built Germanic”, which many contemporaries of course did not correspond to, leading to the humorous notion that they must have shrunk.
