=== Alternative forms ===
Schmunzette (nonstandard, but widely attested)
=== Etymology ===
20th century, from now archaic Schmonzes (“idle talk”) + -ette (after Operette or the like). The first component is from Yiddish שמאָנצעס (shmontses), itself likely from Hebrew שְׁמוּעוֹת (šəmūʿōṯ, “rumours”). The alternative form with u probably through (etymologically unfounded) association with schmunzeln (“to smile slightly, smirk”).
=== Pronunciation ===
IPA(key): /ʃmɔnˈtsɛtə/
=== Noun ===
Schmonzette f (genitive Schmonzette, plural Schmonzetten)
(colloquial, derogatory) a cheesy, kitschy film, play or book
