Borrowed from German Low German Slips, derived from Middle Low German slip, slippe (“flap, lappet, tail”), probably ultimately related to Proto-West Germanic *slīban (“to split”). Cognate with Dutch slip, whence possibly also English slip (“twig, strip”).
