(Gulpen-Wittem) First attested as bitseelsberch in 1370. Potentially a compound of either Vulgar Latin *bacellus (“small brook”) or Middle Dutch butseel (“kind of animal, wineskin”) and berg (“hill, elevated place”). See also Limburgish Sjilberg.
