Saastamoinen

التعريفات والمعاني

== Finnish == === Etymology === Unknown root +‎ -(i)nen, possibly related to the place name Sastamala (located in Satakunta). A connection is uncertain due to the geographical distance, as the surname is from Eastern Finland (mainly North Savonia and North Karelia), while the place is in Satakunta. However, it is possible that e.g. the name was originally given to those who had moved from Sastamala or surrounding regions to North Savonia and North Karelia, which were generally settled later by Finns. If so, the name may have been derived by removing the apparent suffix -la and replacing it with (the originally diminutive) -inen. Some others have theorized that the root Saastamo was originally a given name, although its literal meaning would be unclear. The sa(a)sta in Sastamala is theorized to have meant “mud, mire”, but both this and the current meaning “filth” are unlikely sources for a given name or a surname. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈsɑːstɑmoi̯nen/, [ˈs̠ɑ̝ːs̠tɑ̝ˌmo̞i̯ne̞n] Rhymes: -oinen Syllabification(key): Saas‧ta‧moi‧nen Hyphenation(key): Saas‧ta‧moi‧nen === Proper noun === Saastamoinen a Finnish surname ==== Declension ==== ==== Statistics ==== Saastamoinen is the 226th most common surname in Finland, belonging to 3,338 individuals, according to August 2025 data from the Digital and Population Data Services Agency of Finland. === References ===
