First attested as rogle in 1230. Of uncertain etymology. Potentially a compound of ruig (“rough, wild”), rogge (“rye, Secale cereale”) or dialectal roek (“rook, Corvus frugilegus”) and lo (“light forest”). Compare the English toponym Rayleigh.
