riihi (“drying/threshing cabin”) + mäki (“hill”). The surname derives from place names. The Tavastian town developed around the railway station, originally placed in a relatively small village in western Hausjärvi, which in turn was named after a hill (on which a drying or threshing cabin, riihi, once stood).
