From either Latin pōtus (“drink, drinking; drunken, drained; intoxicated”, noun or adjective) or Ancient Greek ποτός (potós, “for drinking; drinkable”) / Ancient Greek ποτόν (potón, “drink, beverage”) (either way from Proto-Indo-European *peh₃- (“to drink”, verb)) + Ancient Greek ᾰ̓́νθος (ắnthos, “flower”). Interpretable as "flower-drinker."
Coined by American entomologist and paleontologist Samuel Hubbard Scudder in 1872.
