Perhaps related to Latin Pontius, Quinctius, and Oscan Πομπτιες (Pompties). Conway suggests that the name is ultimately derived from a word referring to the fifth ordinal number, which in Proto-Italic was *kʷenktos, itself from Proto-Indo-European *penkʷtós.
