Borrowed from Byzantine Greek Πλήθων (Plḗthōn), adopted by Plethon as a nickname or cognomen from Attic Greek πλῆθος (plêthos, “multitude, great number”) as a classicizing substitute for his surname Γεμιστός (Gemistós), from γεμιστός (gemistós, “filled, stuffed”).
