pieksä-/piekse- (“to beat, strike”) + -mä. mäki (“hill”) has later been introduced folk-etymologically through the inflected forms. Originally used for the lake (*Pieksämäjärvi), referring to the strong waves crashing against the shores, as the lake is relatively large and does not have many islands.
