(village) First attested as aesthem in 1453. Calque of West Frisian Easthim, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian āst (“east”) and hēm (“home, settlement”) or hem (“corner of alluvial land, inland polder”). The element east was added to distinguish the settlement from Westhem.
