(Gelderland) First attested as osterhusen in 1235. From ooster- (“east, eastern”) and the plural form of huis (“house”).
(Groningen) First attested as osterhem in the 11th century. Compound of Old Frisian oster (“eastern, east-”) and heem (“home, settlement”). The second element was gradually replaced with the plural form of huis (“house”).
