Cognate with German Aal, English eel etc. The front-vowel byforms are backformations from the Middle High German umlauted plural æle. The same also explains the alternative feminine gender. The form Iel would be the strictly phonetic development in most areas, but is in practice the rarest because of the influence of the original singular.
