Attested during the Merovingian period as Ulda (fluvius), earlier Ulta, from a Celtic/Gaulish root simplified as *Olt, possibly related to the root of Old Irish oll (“vast, great”) Compare Aluta, as well as the Romanian river Olt (which could be related).
