Literally, “New Sącz”, in contrast with Stary Sącz (“Old Sącz”). The form Sącz is attested since the mid-19th century, from earlier Sandecz, Sądecz (phonetic simplification of the genitive form Sądcza to Sącza, resulting in re-analysis of the nominative form as Sącz), from a personal name Sądek, Sędek + Proto-Slavic *-jь.
