First attested as bernardeskercha in 1094. Compound of noord (“north-”), the toponym Schoorl and Old Dutch walt (“marsh forest, swamp forest”). The settlement was initially called Bernardeskercha, a compound of Bernard (a personal name) and kirika (“church”). The element noord was added to distinguish the settlement from Zuid-Scharwoude.
