Inherited from Ottoman Turkish نوشهر (nevşehir), a calque of Byzantine Greek Νεάπολις (Neápolis); equivalent to nev (“new”) + şehir (“city”). Around 1720, the Grand Vizier Nevşehirli Damat Ibrahim Pasha re-founded and developed the city, changing its name from the previous one Muşkara.
