From Middle High German mitelīden, first used in mystic literature as a calque of Latin compassiō (“compassion”), itself a calque of Ancient Greek συμπάθεια (sumpátheia, “compassion,
sympathy”). By surface analysis, mit (“with”) + Leid (“sorrow, suffering”). From Middle High German is borrowed Dutch medelijden.
