From Middle Low German mēlik, from Old Saxon miluk, from Proto-West Germanic *meluk. The Westphalian forms generally seem to continue an Old Saxon *meluk, unless there had been some sort of secondary lowering. At least in parts of Sauerland, the underlying vowel is -i-.
