=== Etymology ===
From Arabic مَرَّاكُش (marrākuš). First documented in the Cid. It would have been first borrowed into Romance in a shape like /maˈrɔkos/, with /ɔ/ rendering an Arabic [ɒː] or similar (cf. Old Galician-Portuguese Marrocos). It seems that en route to Castille it was “translated” into /maˈru͡ekos/ according to the cross-dialectal correspondence /ɔ/ ⇄ /u͡e/ (as in Portuguese forte ⇄ Spanish fuerte).
