Inherited from Old Polish Lech, the name of the legendary founder of the Polish people (see Lech, Czech, and Rus), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *lęxъ, a hypocoristic form of Proto-Slavic *lęděninъ (“wasteland dweller”). The surname is possibly in some cases a hypocorism of Lestek, diminutive of Lścimir or Lścisław.
