Borrowed from German Low German Kuddelmuddel. The word originally meant "dirty linen" and is derived from the verb koddeln (“to wash clothes superficially”). The rhyming part might be based on a cognate of German Modder (“mud”), a Dutch form of which also led to English muddle.
