From Middle High German kobe (“shed, sty”) (modern Koben) + *holt (“goblin”), from hold (“friendly, gracious”), a euphemistic way of referring to the mischievous beings, from Proto-Germanic *hulþaz (“inclined, favorable”). Related to Dutch kabouter. Typologically compare with English the good folk.
