First attested as aninghum in the 13th century. Calque of West Frisian Kleaster Anjum, derived from kleaster (“monastery”) and a toponym derived from Old Frisian Ane (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and hēm (“home, settlement”). Named after a former monastery.
