== German == === Etymology === A Low and Central German word, from Middle Low German and northern Middle High German klinke (“latch”), from Proto-West Germanic *klinku (“latch”). Eventually derived from Proto-Germanic *klinganą, probably through the sense “to cling”, alternatively through the sense “to sound” (English clink, German klingen, compare also Klinge (“blade”)).
