Kaust- + -inen, from the name of a local farm or holding Kausta around which the town has grown, which in turn is possibly from Old Norse Gautstafr or possibly from the gaust- seen in some Germanic names such as Middle High German Gaustrich, Gausthelm. The surname is from the same Germanic origins, but has also been compared with kausta.
