Kähkö + -nen, originally from Eastern Finland; common on the Karelian Isthmus, in most of Savonia, Kainuu and North Ostrobothnia by the 16th century. Uncertain, possibly from a derivative of käheä (“hoarse”) (as a byname/nickname for someone with a hoarse voice), but compare also dialectal kähkeä (“short-tempered, irascible”).
