jalas (“runner, skid”) + järvi (“lake”). Originally the name of a lake, whence the village and then the parish/municipality. The lake may be named after the river Jalasjoki or vice versa; in either case, it probably refers to a place with trees, the wood of which were well suited for making runners or skids.
