From iso- (“equal”, from Ancient Greek ῐ̓́σος (ĭ́sos)) + Ancient Greek κόμη (kómē, “hair”). Possibly influenced by earlier Pyrrocoma, of the same subtribe. Coined by English botanist and zoologist in America Thomas Nuttall in 1840.
