Borrowed from Hindi हैदराबाद (haidarābād) / Urdu حَیْدَر آبَاد (haydar ābād), from हैदर (haidar) / حَیْدَر (haydar, “lion”) + -आबाद (-ābād) / آبَاد (ābād, placename suffix). Named in honour of the Caliph Ali Ibn Abi Talib, nicknamed "Haidar" for his lion-like valour in battles.
