From Middle High German *huvel, variant of hovel, hobel, hubel, from Old High German hovil, huobil, perhaps originally from Old Saxon, from Proto-Germanic *hubilaz, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *kewb- (“to bend; a bend, joint”), see also Proto-Germanic *hupiz (“hip”), *hufą (“elevated place, hill”).
