First attested as myrtha around 1200. Derived from hoog (“high, upper”) and Old Dutch *mier (“swamp”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix *-iþi. The element hoog was added to distinguish the settlement from Lage Mierde. Compare Melle and Mierlo.
