First attested as hooch boulandt in 1629. Archaic spelling of hoog (“high, elevated”) and bouwland (“farmland, agricultural land”). The name derives from a sector of elevated land indicated as fit for the construction of fortifications on a map from 1629 by surveyor Hendrik Verstralen.
