First attested as hollum in 1485. Borrowed from West Frisian Hollum, potentially derived in turn from Old Frisian holm (“hill, elevated place, island”) or from a compound of Halle (a personal name) or a term cognate to Old English halh (“corner, bend”) and hēm (“home, settlement”). Compare Hall, Hallum and Hellum.
