As a Dutch surname, from an assimilated Dutch form of Henry (also see Henrick), or from the Germanic elements *harjaz (“army”) + *rīks (“ruler”).
As an Irish surname, from Ó hEirc, "descendant of Erc," eventually meaning "speckled." Also spelled as Harkin.
