From German heilig (“holy”), as in Middle High German Heiligland (“holy land”)
From the North Frisian for high, similar to Hallig; hinted by the Heligolanders' self-designation of Halunder.
Related to the legendary hero Helgi, identical to the Old Norse name Helgi.
