Heerewaarden

== Dutch == === Etymology === First attested as ad heriuuarda in 997. Potentially derived from either Proto-Germanic *harjawardô- (“military outpost”) or a compound derived from Old Dutch heri (“army, host”) and warda (“watch, lookout”). A proposed derivation from a compound of heer (“lord”) (referring in this case to Otto II) and Old Dutch werde (“land next to water, riverine island”) clashes with the oldest attestations. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˌɦeː.rəˈʋaːr.də(n)/ Hyphenation: Hee‧re‧waar‧den Rhymes: -aːrdən === Proper noun === Heerewaarden n a village and former municipality of Maasdriel, Gelderland, Netherlands Synonym: Paolingdurp (Carnival nickname) ==== Derived terms ==== Heerewaardenaar Heerewaardens === References === van Berkel, Gerard; Samplonius, Kees (2018), Nederlandse plaatsnamen verklaard (in Dutch), Mijnbestseller.nl, →ISBN
