Heerewaarden

== Dutch ==
=== Etymology ===
First attested as ad heriuuarda in 997. Potentially derived from either Proto-Germanic *harjawardô- (“military outpost”) or a compound derived from Old Dutch heri (“army, host”) and warda (“watch, lookout”). A proposed derivation from a compound of heer (“lord”) (referring in this case to Otto II) and Old Dutch werde (“land next to water, riverine island”) clashes with the oldest attestations.
