Apart from local preferences, we can distinguish those domestic exercises given in compulsory school, those given in further educational institutions, and even those part of vocational examinations. For instance, one such assignment, variably named by the either term, was historically part of the state certification program (Staatsprüfung) required after finishing law school in Germany to gain access to legal professions, rather than included in school programs, until reformed in that respect by the Bologna Process in 2003 (see the ministerial statistics for all states following this year), after which, in favour of greater import of scientific study of the law, universities had to examine a final coursework Hausarbeit along a written five-hour test Aufsichtsarbeit according to the case method in one specialization area, the Schwerpunktbereich, the examinations about which weigh 30 % of the total mark according to federal requirement (§ 5d Abs. 2 DRiG). the remaining 70 % left for the state to examine. A limited number of term papers called Hausarbeiten and such a final one, if not a thesis – not required for a considerable list of state-regulated professions prepared for in science colleges –, remain the only scientific works many German university students have to complete, and homework Hausaufgaben is no general occurrence after secondary education; Hausarbeiten is the name of scientific works obligatory over the semesters of academic graduation.
