Potentially attested as halenderen in 1254, attested with certainty as halderen in 1294-1295. Potentially derived from Proto-Germanic *halahdrum (“place with juniper bushes”). A proposed derivation from Middle Dutch hael (“barren”) is unlikely. Compare Halder and Hellendoorn.
