Originally referring to the former reed-covered wetland extending from Nordstaden to the hill Gullberg (literally “Gold Mountain”), reclaimed in the 1840s. It is unknown what kind of "gold" the name refers to. The hill has since been extensively blasted, possibly obscuring the original basis for the name.
