The river is first attested as Church Slavonic Гладра (Gladra) [1348], Venetan Jadro [1459], Italian Giadri [1688], Ghiadri [from 1641].
The village is attested as Church Slavonic Гладра (Gladra) [1348], Giadri [1610, 1688], Ghiadri [from 1621].
The village got its name from the river, which once met the Drin in the village's location. The river now meets the Drin further north between Vau-Dejës and Mjedë, while the traditional path of the river still exists as a smaller stream.
